Level 6 Award in First Aid at Work

QUALIFUCATION OVERVIEW

The objective of this qualification is to support learners in becoming first aiders in the workplace. The content of the qualification meets the HSE requirements for training first aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment. 
The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider, how to assess an incident & recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider 
  2. Be able to assess an incident
  3. Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
  4. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
  5. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  6. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
  7. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries
  8. Be able to conduct a secondary survey
  9. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  10. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  11. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
  12. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  13. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  14. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning 
  15. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
  16. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness 

GUIDANCE ON ASSESSMENT

Highfield has created assessment paperwork for each component of the assessment, which are each graded pass/fail:

1. PRACTICAL OBSERVATION:

The practical assessment is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment requires learners to demonstrate practical first aid skills. The practical assessment will be recorded using the practical matrix within the Assessment Pack.

2. CENTRE-MARKED MULTIPLE-CHOICE THEORY ASSESSMENT:

Learners are required to answer a series of questions contained within theory question papers, available to download from the members’ area of the website. Oral questioning may be used. In this case, the assessor should document the responses within the assessment pack. 

Learners must achieve a pass in each
element to pass the qualification.
